Spare Parts & Battery Logistics: What “48-hour repair” actually means in Europe

This is the first of Robot Service Map’s data pages on the commercial service reality behind robot purchases in Europe. It explains one specific, verifiable fact: the repair cycle of a robot bought from a manufacturer without European spare-parts inventory is governed by Chinese logistics and IATA dangerous-goods air-freight rules — not by any SLA the buyer was shown.
The claim
Many Chinese robot OEMs sell into Europe through distributors or direct channels without holding regional spare-parts inventory. When a critical part fails, the buyer is told the part “will be shipped.” What “shipped” means in practice:

What this means for a buyer
- “Fast air-freight rescue” is not a real option for battery modules. IATA Class 9 dangerous-goods rules (cargo-only, SoC cap, damaged-cell ban) mean a spare battery cannot simply be express-shipped when the machine is down.
- The only way to honor a “48-hour dispatch” promise is European local spare-parts stock. A manufacturer without a European parts warehouse cannot physically deliver a battery module across borders that fast.
- “No EU-authorized service point found” is not a technicality — it is a downtime forecast. When RSM records that a model has no documented European service point, it is recording the buyer’s likely repair timeline, not a marketing label.
How RSM verifies this
RSM does not grade or rank manufacturers. For each model we record, with a source and check date:
- whether an authorized service point exists in the EU (and where),
- whether the manufacturer holds regional spare-parts inventory (documented),
- whether a written response-time commitment (SLA) exists,
- whether an EU legal entity exists for warranty and repair obligations.
A model with none of these is recorded as “no documented European service coverage” — a factual statement, not an opinion.
FAQ
Q: Doesn’t the EU Right to Repair force manufacturers to stock spare parts?
The Right to Repair Directive (EU) 2024/1799 took effect 2026-07-31 and its product list continues to expand, and European buyers are already writing service clauses into tender documents — but buyers currently cannot tell which manufacturer complies. Industrial robots are not yet listed in Annex II. For the machines RSM covers today, spare-parts availability is a commercial question, not yet a legal obligation. Q: Is this a problem specific to Chinese manufacturers?
No. It applies to any manufacturer that sells into Europe without regional spare-parts inventory. Chinese OEMs are simply the largest group doing so today, and Interact Analysis lists “localized ground service” as one of the five globalization barriers for Chinese mobile-robot vendors — meaning the market itself treats this as an open problem. Q: Why is a battery module the bottleneck, specifically?
Lithium-ion batteries are IATA Class 9 dangerous goods (UN3480 bare cells / UN3481 packed with equipment). Bare cells travel cargo-aircraft-only, with a 30% state-of-charge cap and mandatory Cargo Aircraft Only labeling; damaged or recalled cells cannot fly at all.
